2015 Kentucky Derby Odds and Betting Tips

By Horse Racing

Kentucky Derby Logo 2015It’s only a week and a day until “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”.  That’s right the Kentucky Derby is set to take place on May 2nd to really kick off the horse racing season in the United States.  This year there are really 3 favourites heading into the first race of the Triple Crown and only time will tell which horse will carry the hope or a new Triple Crown winner this year.  We’ve come close recently having a horse with a chance heading into the Belmont Stakes two of the last three years, but ‘I’ll Have Another’ failed to even start in 2012 and ‘California Chrome’ was bested by ‘Tonalist’ last year.

Anyways, let’s take a look at the odds for the race at this moment and a closer look at the favourites.  I’ll follow that up with who I’m personally going to bet on at the 2015 Kentucky Derby and you can choose to follow my advice or go with a bigger longshot.

2015 Kentucky Derby Tips

American Pharoah is the main favourite at +230.  This horse has won each of the four most recent races he has entered in his career and currently has the fastest time at  1 1/8 miles, which is the longest these three-year olds have ran so far.  He clocked in at 1:48.52 at the Arkansas Derby, which is the fastest time at the Arkansas Derby since 1984.  He also completely dominated his races, so he may even have more in the tank. You can take a look at the Arkansas Derby here:

Dortmund is the most likely to spoil American Pharoah’s party at the Derby.  He had a very comparable time of 1:48.73 at the Santa Anita Derby, which you can watch below. He’s also beaten Firing Line (+1500 at the Derby) in two races, which shows he can compete against and defeat other top horses.

The other horse in the mix is Carpe Diem at +500. His time was not nearly as impressive as the other favourites though, clocking in at 1:49.77 in his most recent race at Blue Grass Stakes. He has also shown he can lose, when he finished second to Texas Red in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile race last November. I’m personally not that high on Carpe Diem, but he definitely has a chance if the race goes his way.

I do like either American Pharoah or Dortmund to win this race. They’ve just been putting up by far the fastest times of the horses in the field, so I think it would take a poorly run race by both of these horses for another competitor to win the Derby. Here’s hoping the best horse wins next Saturday so we have another shot at a Triple Crown and a reason to bet on the 2015 Belmont Stakes this year.
