The very best in the world are destined for the west coast of Scotland for the playing of the 145th Open Championship this week. Royal Troon is the venue and will host its 9th Open, with the first one played back in 1923 at this venue. For many golfing enthusiasts and most players, the Open Championship is considered the most prestigious event on the golfing calendar. The incredible history over the past century and a half is certainly spine tingling and hair raising. Some of the best and most memorable battles have been fought on the links courses of Britain, and have given us some of the most iconic moments the game has ever seen. Royal Troon is 7, 190 yards long and is a par 71. The greatest test being the links conditions and the unwavering wind that will undoubtedly influence the outcome of this famous old championship. One of the highlights of the course is the 8th hole par 3. It measures a tame 123 yards but is anything but mild. This is the shortest hole in Open history but poses many different problems. Aptly named the postage stamp because of its diminutive green, it is quite simply a work of art. During practice this week Rory Mcilroy made a 9 there and took 6 shots in one of the greenside bunkers. What will this classic old tournament throw up this week for us? Will Dustin Johnson carry on his surge to become number one in the world with a third straight win in a row? History seems to suggest that a new major winner will prevail as 5 of the last 8 have champions at Royal Troon have recorded that as their only major win. The watching world looks to the craggy coastline of western Scotland this week as the world’s best try and etch their name into golfing folklore history.

Martin Kaymer is on the brink of winning. The two time major winner is coming off a few fantastic weeks on the European Tour. A 5th place finish at the Open de France and a 13th last week at the Scottish Open seems to suggest that Kaymer is in good form and ready to win. He knows how to win a major championship and will have his eyes set on winning at Royal Troon.
