Oregon @ California – Week 11 Free Pick & Analysis

Oregon @ California  o/u 67.5

Oregon might be the most exciting team to watch in the nation.  The Ducks have a chance the break the NCAA all time record for points per game (56.0) as they currently average just over 54 ppg.  More importantly, Oregon(9-0) is in the thick of the national championship picture after disposing of 17th ranked USC in Los Angeles a week ago.  In that game, Ducks RB Kenjon Barner absolutely exploded for an Oregon record 321 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns.  Barner’s performance, while spectacular is not completely out of the norm for an Oregon team that averages over 560 yards per game.  Most impressive, the Ducks have routinely jumped out to enormous first half leads (56-0 at Colorado; 43-7 @ Arizona State) while coasting to the finish in the second half.  Oregon’s numbers could be much more gaudy if not for calling off the dogs in quarters three and four.

The biggest obstacle in Oregon’s pursuit for a national championship is not this week’s opponent, Cal, or any other opponent on the Ducks regular season schedule.  The Oregon defense has been the biggest question mark as to whether the Ducks can hoist the school’s first BCS Championship trophy.  Oregon gave up 51 points in last week’s game with USC – by far the best team they’ve faced this season.

Oregon takes a major drop down in class this week, taking on a beat up Cal team.  Starting QB Zach Maynard and stud WR Keenan Allen will not play for the Golden Bears this week.  Cal has been eliminated from bowl contention so the only motivation for this team is to play for their coach’s job.  Cal coach Jeff Tedford is definitely on the hot seat, but will he get his guys up for this game?  Will it matter?

What will happen:  Oregon will move the ball with ease whenever they want and should jump out to yet another huge first half lead before tapping the brakes in the second half.  Needless to say, Cal won’t put up 51 points on Oregon this week and they certainly won’t win this game.  But the Bears will most likely get their obligatory 14-21 points in the second half when the game is out of reach to help push the total over.

Prediction:  Oregon 57  Cal 23

The Play: OVER 67.5

YTD Record: 10-8 (5-1 last two weeks)
