My Pick

The 33-year-old LaManna makes the ring walk with a record of 39-5-1 with 18 Kos and has boxed 245 rounds since turning pro in 2011. The matchmaker and promoter stands 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 74-inch reach and has below-average power in his arsenal as just 46.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s halted his last four opponents and five of the past six. LaManna started his career by going 16-0 before being stopped by Antoine Douglas in the sixth round in 2015 for the vacant WBA Fedelatin title.

He lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Dusty Harrison in 2016 for the vacant USBA Welterweight title and was halted in the fifth round by Jorge Cota in January, 2020 before dropping a 10-round unanimous decision to Brian Mendoza seven months later in his next fight. LaManna’s last defeat came at the hands of Erislandy Lara when he as halted in just 80 seconds in May, 2021.

Since then, LaManna has won nine fights in a row. His lone draw was a 10-round affair with Gabriel Bracero in 2018. Since turning pro, LaManna has won the WBC Fecarbox, and New Jersey State Welterweight Titles. His biggest wins have been over Saul Roman, Francisco Cordero, Juan Manuel Witt, Juan Carlos Abreu, Jorge Pimentel and Mike Arnaoutis.

Charlo just turned 35 years old and is also a former IBF Jr. Middleweight Champion who defended the belt three times after winning it by stopping Cornelius Bundrage in the third round in September, 2015. He enters the contest with a perfect record of 33-0 with 22 Ko’s and stands 6-feet-1-inches tall with a 73.5-inch reach, basically the same size as LaManna. Charlo’s got enough power in his fists to do some damage with a current knockout ratio of 66.7 per cent and has stopped 20 of his last 27 opponents but has gone the distance in his past three fights.

He won the interim WBC Middleweight Title in April, 2018 when he stopped Hugo Centeno Jr in the second round. Charlo has 181 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2008 and this will be his ninth contest since moving up in weight from the junior middleweight ranks. His biggest wins have come against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Julian Williams, Matt Korobov, Austin Trout and Bundrage, who was 42 years old when Charlo beat him for the title. Charlo doesn’t always take on elite level boxers but has overpowered most of his opponents so far.

The former champion has displayed fine speed and boxing skills but his chin has yet to be really tested. He’s a strong, offensive-minded boxer who would rather his fights didn’t reach the scorecards. His only other notable win so far has been against Antwone Smith. And although he’s beaten a world champion in Bundrage and former world champions in Trout and Williams, Charlo hasn’t exactly proven to the fans to be a consistent world-class boxer but his win over Derevyanchenko definitely pointed him in the right direction.

Prediction…

Charlo has been inactive as this is just his third fight since September, 2020 and he’s now 25 years old. LaManna has been riding a decent winning streak but he doesn’t have the greatest of chins. This should be a competitive fight for a few rounds but once Charlo shakes of the ring rust he should take over. I’m expecting a Charlo victory here and a stoppage is a distinct possibility.

Charlo has superior power and boxing skills.
