Sadam Ali vs Cody Wilson Preview August 31st, 2025

After a six-year absence, former WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Sadam Ali of Brooklyn, new York returns to the ring this Sunday, August 31st. He’ll be taking on Cody Wilson of West Virginia in a 10-round junior middleweight tilt. The fight from Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit, Michigan can be seen live on BXNGTV.com. Ali last fought in May, 2019 when he was stopped in the third round by Anthony Young in a shot at the vacant WBC USA Welterweight Title. Wilson was last in the ring in April when he dropped an eight-round unanimous decision to Ivan Dancha. Ali won the WBO World Title in December 2017 when he upset Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision. He then lost it in his first defence when he was knocked out in the fourth round five months later by Jaime Munguia.

  • Sadam Ali -2000

My Pick

Ali is now 36 years old and makes the ring walk with a record of 27-3 with 14 Kos. His first defeat came against Jessie Vargas by a ninth-round stoppage for the vacant WBO Welterweight Title in March of 2016. His other losses were to Munguia and Young and he’s been stopped in all three of his defeats. Ali enjoyed an excellent amateur career and earned a spot on America’s 2008 Olympic boxing team, fighting at the 2008 Games in Beijing, China. He was also a Junior Olympic National Champion, an Under-19 National Champion, a PAL National Champion, and a two-time New York City Golden Gloves Champ.

He won a National Golden Glove Title at featherweight in 2006 and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships the same year. He won another National Golden Glove Championship as a lightweight in 2007. Ali then became the first Arab-American to represent the USA in the Olympics. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 73-inch reach and has boxed 169 rounds since turning pro in 2009.

He isn’t regarded as a big puncher as 51.8 per cent of his victories have come by stoppage. He last halted an opponent in 2017 when he dropped Jorge Silva in the third round.

Ali would prefer to use his boxing skills rather than slug it out, but shouldn’t be underestimated when it comes to his power. He was at his very best against Miguel Cotto when he won the WBO Title but that was eight years ago now. He’s also beaten the likes of Mauricio Herrera, Johan Perez, Luis Abregu and Saul Corral. Ali captured the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Welterweight Belt in 2014 via a 10-round split decision over Jeremy Bryan.

Cody Wilson is 31 years of age and carries around a record of 14-5 with 9 Ko’s. He’s fought 82 rounds as a pro since making his debut back in 2018. He had a short amateur career and also competed in TUF-pro as a pro Team Combat League fighter. There is no height and reach information for Wilson so we don’t know how he measures against Ali size-wise. As far as power goes, he’s got a decent amount of it as 64.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage.

His first defeat came in his pro debut at the hands of Richie Cantolina as he dropped a four-round unanimous decision. He lost a 10-round unanimous nod to Noel Echevarria in 2019 and was stopped by Elvis Rodriguez in the third round in 2020. Wilson was also stopped in the third round in 2022 when Tre’Sean Wiggins beat him in a shot at the vacant NABA Welterweight Title. Wilson did manage to capture the USA West Virginia State Super Welterweight Title in 2020 with an eight-round unanimous decision over Dan Karpency. Just 10 of Wilson’s 19 opponents had a winning record and he was beaten by five of them.

Prediction…

Ali has been out of the ring for just over six yeatrs so it’s hard to predict how he’s going to perform. He’s also 36 years old now, five years older than Wilson. Ali has had a hard time when facing power punchers and Wilson has just enough of it to do some damage in the ring. Ali is quick on his feet and likes to throw his effective left hook to keep his opponents honest and I think as long as his chin holds up he should be successful in his comeback fight this weekend.

Ali has the skills to pull this out.
