My Pick
The 32-year-old Pero is a southpaw who fights out of Miami, Florida and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 12-0 with 8 Ko’s and just 48 rounds of experience since turning pro in 2019. He enjoyed an extensive amateur career with well over 100 bouts and fought in the World Series of Boxing. He was beaten as an amateur and by Frazer Clarke, Joe Joyce and Frank Sanchez but also had several victories over Sanchez and won the 2011 Cuban National Championships. He also won gold at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games as well as the 2010 Youth Olympics and Youth World Championships.
Pero represented his homeland at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and was stopped by Filip Hrgovic in his second bout. As a pro, He’s won the vacant WBA Fedelatin Heavyweight Title as he stopped Jorge Arias in the second round in 2020 but hasn’t fought anybody of note. Pero stands just over 6-feet-4-inches tall with a 79-inch reach and has pretty good power in his punches as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 66.7 per cent. He won five fights in a row by stoppage until going the distance with Webster in his last outing.
As for Thompson, the former IBF European Cruiserweight Champion hails from Manchester and climbs through the ropes with a record of 15-1 with 12 Ko’s so edges Pero in the power department as 80 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He’s got the size for the heavyweight division as he measures 6-feet-6-inches tall with an unlisted reach, which gives him a 1.5-inch height advantage on Pero.
He made his pro debut in 2015 and has boxed just 45 rounds since due to his power. Thompson captured the vacant IBF European Title in August, 2022 when he got up from the canvas in the 10th round to beat Vasal Ducar via unanimous decision. Like, Pero, he hasn’t really been tested by the world’s top boxers other than Opetaia as he’s beaten opponents such as Shane Dragonslayer, Mariano Angel Gudino and Piotr Podlucki. In fact, nine of his 16 opponents entered the ring with a losing record.
Prediction…
Thompson has the height but he’s not a natural heavyweight as the heaviest he’s weighed in for a fight has been 206 lbs back in 2016. He’s also been out of the ring for just over two years and is trying to bounce back from a knockout loss to Jai Opetaia. Both boxers have basically been fighting domestic-level opponents up to now and this is a pretty even matchup. I believe if Pero lets his hands go though he will come out of this fight at 13-0 and a stoppage is quite possible.
Pero is a natural heavyweight with power.
