Justin Pauldo vs Juan Carlos Burgos Preview June 7th, 2025

Veteran Juan Carlos Burgos of Mexico returns to the ring this Saturday, June 7th to take on Justin Pauldo of Orlando, Florida. The 10-round lightweight tilt from San Antonio, Texas can be seen live in most nations on Probox TV. Burgos last fought in April when he stopped Rodolfo Hernandez Montoya in the second round while Pauldo last fought in February when he halted Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in the eighth round. Burgos’ fight in April was his first in almost two years as he hadn’t fought since July, 2023 when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Andy Cruz in Cruz’s pro debut in a shot at the vacant IBF International Lightweight Title.

  • Justin Pauldo -1000

My Pick

The 30-year-old Pauldo fights out of Houston, Texas and makes the ring walk with a mark of 18-2 with 9 Ko’s. He’s boxed 97 rounds since making his pro debut in 2014 following his amateur career. He measures 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 72 inch reach so gives up 2.5-inches in height to Burgos but has a 3.5-inch reach advantage. Pauldo doesn’t possess too much in the way of power as just 50 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s halted three of his past eight opponents.

The first defeat on Pauldo’s record came at the hands of Efrain Cruz by way of a six-round split decision back in 2015. His other loss was a 10-round split decision defeat to Miguel Madueno in February, 2024, meaning he went a span of 13 fights and nine years between defeats. Pauldo has a solid chin but hasn’t faced any legitimate contenders other than Rakhimov with his best wins coming against Jerry Perez, Josec Ruiz and Joshua Zuniga. He was also stopped in three rounds by Austin Delay in 2019 but the result was changed to a no-contest.

Burgos is now 37 years old and climbs through the ring ropes with a mark of 36-8-3 with 22 Ko’s. He turned pro back in 2004 and has 321 rounds of experience under his belt since. He measures just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 68.5-inch and isn’t really known as a heavy hitter either but does possess decent power in his fists as 61.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He’s won just three of his past 10 contests with six losses and a draw and has stopped just one opponent since 2016.

Burgos has had three world title shots in his career but he was beaten by Hozumi Hasegawa via a unanimous decision in 2010 in Japan for the vacant WBC Featherweight Title then took on Roman Martinez in 2013 and managed a split decision draw in a shot at the WBO Super Featherweight Crown. He had another shot at the WBO Super Featherweight Belt in 2014 but lost a unanimous decision to Mikey Garcia. Since turning pro, Burgos has won the WBC Super Silver Featherweight Title and the WBO Latino Super Featherweight Title.

His other defeats came at the hands of Devin Haney by 12-round unanimous decision for the vacant IBF North American Lightweight Title in 2018; to Hector Tanajara by 10-round unanimous decision for the WBC United States Lightweight Crown in 2020; to Xavier Martinez and Stirling Castillo by 10-round unanimous decisions in 2021;to Keyshawn Davis by eight-round unanimous decision in 2022 for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Belt and the loss to Andy Cruz in 2023. His other draws were with Yakubu Amidu over 12 rounds in 2013 and over 10 rounds with Angel Fierro in March, 2022.

Burgos has beaten some solid boxers during his career with wins over the likes of Vyacheslav Gusev, Ricardo Castillo, Frankie Archuleta, Luis Cruz, Cristobal Cruz and Cesar Vazquez but has fallen short when stepping up in class. Burgos has decent power, quick hands a very solid chin and is quite mobile in the ring, but he’s going to be facing a boxer who’s seven years his junior and it’s definitely not going to be easy.

Prediction…

Burgos has never been stopped as a pro in 47 fights even though he’s lost eight of them and Pauldo isn’t known for his power so it will be interesting to see what unfolds here. Pauldo looked quite impressive in his last fight against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov and possesses better speed and skills at this stage of their careers. This will be a bit of a test for Pauldo but it’s one he should pass even though it’s likely to go the distance.

Pauldo has a the edge in skills and is seven years younger than Burgos.
