Gerald Washington vs Kingsley Ibeh Preview September 20th, 2025

The vacant WBC FECARBOX Heavyweight Title is on the line this Saturday, September 20th as veterans Kingsley ‘The Black Lion’ Ibeh of Nigeria and Gerald Washington of San Jose, California are set to clash in a 10-round tilt in San Salvador, El Salvador. Washington fought for the first time in close to two years in March when he stopped Carlos Eduardo Cardenas Ramirez in the third round to snap a three-fight losing skid. Ibeh last saw action in January when he halted Scott Alexander after just 156 seconds to capture the WBC Latino Heavyweight Crown.

My Pick
Washington is now 43 years old and climbs into the ring with a 21-6-1 record with 14 Ko’s and has boxed 138 rounds since turning pro back in 2012. He’s a former football player and member of the U.S. Navy and didn’t turn pro until he was 30 years old. Washington’s been been stopped in five of his six losses. He was halted by WBC champ Deontay Wilder in five rounds in 2017 as well as after eight rounds against Jarrell Miller in his next fight five months later. He was stopped in the second stanza by Adam Kownacki in January, 2019, by Charles Martin in six rounds in 2020 and by Ali Eren Demirezen in 2022.
The only time he lost on points was to Dereck Chisora via a 10-round unanimous decision in 2023. His lone draw was a 10-round tilt with Amir Mansour in 2015. Washington measures 6-feet-6-inches tall and has a wingspan of 82 inches. He’s not a knockout artist but has pretty good power as 66.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he has just two Ko’s in the last eight fights. He halted Robert Helenius in the eighth round in 2019 and didn’t record another stoppage until earlier this year when he beat Ramirez. Washington has beaten some recognizable heavyweights during his career such as Ray Austin, Eddie Chambers, Jason Gavern, Nagy Aguilera, Sherman Williams and Travis Walker.
The 31-year-old Ibeh, who fights out of Phoenix, Arizona, boasts a record of 15-2-1 with 13 Ko’s and has boxed just 50 rounds since making his pro debut in 2019. He’s also a former football player as he was a defensive lineman at Washburn University and played in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He’s also the cousin of notorious heavyweight Ike Ibeabuchi, who recently returned to the ring himself. Ibeh stands 6-feet-4-inches tall with an 80-inch reach so gives up two inches in both height and reach to Washington and is currently riding a 10-fight winning streak. When it comes to power, Ibeh has plenty of it as 86.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including five in a row and nine of his past 10.
He hasn’t beaten any contenders however and when he did step up in class earlier in his career he couldn’t get over the hump. Ibeh lost his second pro fight to Waldo Cortes Acosta via a four-round split decision in 2019 but stopped Acosta in the fourth round a year later in their rematch. Ibeh faced Guido Vianello in 2020 as well and battled to a six-round draw. His second defeat came at the hands of Jared Anderson in February, 2021 when he was halted in the sixth and final round. Ibeh has recorded eight first-round knockouts with two in the second round, two in the third and one in the fourth stanza and that’s why he’s boxed just 50 rounds as a pro.
Prediction…
Washington has lost four of his past six fights and six of the past nine. He’s also 43 years old and hasn’t been very active as he’s fought just seven times since 2018 with a couple of lengthy layoffs thrown in there. Still, this could be an exciting fight to watch while it lasts as Washington doesn’t have the greatest chin but does have the power to stop any heavyweight out there. Ibeh is known for his power but will need a solid chin if Washington lands the first clean shot. On the other hand, the writing’s often on the wall once Washington is hurt in a fight and he needs to make sure he isn’t caught early. I think somewhere along the line though Ibeh will put together enough shots to win by stoppage.
Ibeh’s power and Washington’s susceptible chin should result in an Ibeh victory.
