My Pick
The 31-year-old Kambosos carries around a record of 21-3 with 10 Ko’s with his first two losses coming against Devin Haney. The native of Sydney turned pro back in 2013 and has 177 rounds of experience under his belt since. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 68-inch reach and has average power as 47.6 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he has gone the distance in six of his last seven outings. Even though Lomachenko stopped him and he’s been dropped before. He has a decent chin.
Kambosos reportedly won 85 of his 100 amateur bouts and since turning pro has also won the IBF Pan Pacific Lightweight Title along with the Australian NSW, Australian, WBA-PABA, and WBA Oceania Lightweight Belts. Of course, his career highlight though was beating Teofimo Lopez by split decision in 2021 to capture the IBF/WBA and WBO Lightweight Belts which he managed to do by being aggressive in the ring and not being afraid to let his hands go. He then lost those belts in his next fight when he lost to Haney the first time in June 2022.
He then lost a second unanimous decision to Haney four months later. Kambosos turned pro at the age of 19 but other than Lomachenko, Haney, Lopez and Lee Selby, he hasn’t really faced many other legitimate contenders other than perhaps Mickey Bey. He’s also beaten the likes of Brandon Ogilvie, Qamil Balla, Krai Setthaphon, Jose Forero, Rey Perez and Richard Pena. In fact, arguably, the best opponent he’s shared the ring with could very well be Manny Pacquiao when sparring with the former world champion.
The 24-year-old Wyllie makes the ring walk with a record of 16-1 with 15 Ko’s and has boxed just 51 rounds since making his pro debut in 2020. As an amateur he competed in the 2019 Australian National Championships and Arafura Games, the 2017 and 2018 Australian Youth and Junior National Championships, the 2016 Australian Golden Gloves and the 2015 Australian National championships. . Wyllie measures 5-feet-7-inches tall with an unlisted reach, so is two inches shorter than Kambosos.
As far as power is concerned, the young man has plenty of it as 15 of his 16 wins have come by stoppage for a knockout ratio of 93.8 per cent. The only victory he had to go the distance in was an eight-round split decision over Dana Coolwell in 2021 for the vacant Australian National Boxing Federation Australasian Lightweight Title. In fact, that’s the only fight Wyllie has heard the final bell as his lone defeat came at the hands of Faavesi Isaako via a third-round TKO in 2023.
Wyllie also won the vacant Australian National Boxing Federation Queensland Junior Welterweight Belt in 2021 when he halted Matt Powell in just 46 seconds. He then added the vacant Australian National Boxing Federation Australasian Junior Welterweight Belt in 2023 when he stopped Kye MacKenzie in 136 seconds. Wyllie has yet to take on a world-ranked contender so will be taking a big step up in class against Kambosos this weekend.
Prediction…
Kambosos is more of a blue-collar fighter but lacks solid power. He’s not afraid to let his hands go and wins most of his fights on sheer determination. Wyllie is just 24 years old with plenty of power and Kambosos is stepping up in weight. Wyllie is also a late replacement so anything is possible here and a win for the youngster this weekend wouldn’t really come as a complete shock. Of course, we have to give the edge to Kambosos however as he’s a former world champion.
Kambosos has a definite edge in experience.
