  • Fernando David Saucedo +600
  • Richard Commey -1000

My Pick

Saucedo is a 43-year-old veteran who climbs through the ropes with a mark of 64-10-3 with 10 Ko’s and has boxed 494 rounds since turning pro in 2001. He stands just over 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach. He lacks power though as just 10 of his wins have come by stoppage which translates into just 15.6 per cent. Saucedo’s last stoppage victory came back in 2015 when he halted Carlos Fulgencio in the second round. He’s also gone just 3-4 in his last seven fights.

Boxing as a pro for almost a quarter of a century, Saucedo has faced some top boxers such as Acelino Freitas, Chris John, Ismael Barroso, Subriel Matias, Cristian Mijares, Emmanuel Tagoe and Rances Barthelemy. The problem is that he lost all of those fights however. He has also lost to Nedal Hussein by disqualification, Claudio Rosendo Tapia by unanimous decision, and to Fabian Valentin Martinez by a four-round majority decision way back in 2002.

Saucedo’s fought a real mixed bag of opponents and has been stopped four times: by Barroso in 2022; Matias in 2018; Mijares in 2018 and Tagoe, also in 2018. His bout against Tagoe was for the IBO Lightweight Belt and his fight against Barthelemy was a shot at the IBF Super Featherweight Title. Saucedo did win the vacant IBF Latino Super Featherweight Belt in 20111 with a 12-round unanimous decision over Carlos Ricardo Rodriguez and captured the vacant WBC Silver Super Featherweight Crown via a 12-round unanimous decision over Sergio Manuel Medina in 2013. Saucedo is a good counterpuncher who goes to the body as well as the head and likes to throw quick combinations.

Commey is now 38 years old and fights out of New York City. In February, 2021 he decided to make a comeback after a devastating second-round knockout loss at the hands of Teofimo Lopez in December 2019and stopped Jackson Marinez in six rounds. He was then derailed by Vasyl Lomachenko in December, 2021 when he was dropped in the seventh round and lost a 12-round unanimous decision. He fought in 2022 and battled to a 10-round draw with former world champion Jose Pedraza and then lost to Ramirez in his last outing in March 2023. Therefore he’s winless in his last three fights and has won just one of his past five.

This sees Commey make the ring walk with a mark of 30-5-1 with 27 Ko’s. He won the vacant IBF Lightweight Title with a second-round stoppage over Isa Chaniev in February, 2019 then stopped Ray Beltran in the eighth round in his first defence in June. He won the title in his second shot as he fought Robert Easter for the vacant belt in 2016 and dropped him in the eighth round but lost a split decision. His other career loss came three months later when he dropped another split decision, this time to Denis Shafikov. Commey turned pro in 2011 and has boxed 212 rounds since.

He’ obviously got some power 90 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage (27 of his 30). Commey stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with 71-inch reach which means he’s just half-an-inch taller than Saucedo but has a 4.5-inch edge min reach. Commey’s biggest career wins have been against the likes of Chaniev, Beltran, Bilal Mohammad, Gary Buckland and Yardley Cruz. Since turning pro, he has also won the Ghanaian, IBF Continental Africa, African Boxing Union, Commonwealth, IBF Inter-Continental, and WBC International Silver Lightweight Titles.

Prediction…

Commey’s getting up there in age at 38 but he’s still five years younger than Saucedo. He has the better boxing skills and way more power but is coming off of a lengthy layoff. Commey should be able to snap his three-fight winless skid as long as he doesn’t take Saucedo too lightly and is prepared to work hard for eight rounds.

Commey has a big edge in power and boxing skills.
