My Pick
The 27-year-old Nunez owns a fine mark of 28-1 with 27 wins coming by stoppage and has boxed 114 rounds since making his pro debut in 2015 as a teenager. He measures 5-feet-6-inches tall with a 68-inch reach and obviously has tremendous power. He’s gone the distance just twice as a pro as he dropped a six-round unanimous decision to Hiram Gallardo by scores of 57-56 across the board in 2018 and of course went 12 rounds in his last outing. Since that defeat, Nunez has bounced back with 18 straight wins with 17 of them being by knockout.
He beat former world champion Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in an elimination bout when he stopped him in the 11th round on the road in early 2024 in Tajikistan. He also has wins over Manuel Marriaga, Oscar Escandon, Jesus Ceyca, Adrian Perez, Osvaldo Maldonado and Rafael Hernandez. He stopped Jose Vega Ochoa in just 84 seconds in 2018 to win the vacant WBC Youth Silver Featherweight Title. Nunez has fought just three times outside of Mexico and those were his past three outings against Rakhimov, Marriaga and Rikiishi. He has gone over 10 rounds just three times; when he stopped Rakhimov in the 11th frame and Willmank Canonico Brito in the 10th and final round in September, 2022 and in his win over Rikiishi.
The 30-year-old Diaz makes the ring walk with a mark of 30-5 with 19 Kos and also showed plenty of heart in his loss to Emanuel Navarrete back in 2021 when he was stopped in the 12th round in a shot at the WBO Featherweight Title. He then lost his next fight when he was edged by former world champion Isaac Dogboe by 10-round majority decision in seven months later in an attempt at the NABF Featherweight Belt.
Diaz also lost a unanimous decision to Japan’s Masayuki Ito for the vacant WBO Super Featherweight Championship in July, 2018 and dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Shakur Stevenson for the vacant WBO NABO Featherweight Crown in April, 2019. His last defeat came at the hands of Henry Lebron last December in a shot at the WBO NABO, and the vacant IBF Latino Super Featherweight Belts when he dropped a 10-round unanimous decision.
Diaz was born in Philadelphia, but the family moved to Puerto Rico when he was just a month old and now reportedly fights out of Orlando, Florida. He turned pro back in 2013 after 187 amateur bouts and has boxed 194 rounds since. Diaz stands 5-feet-6-inches tall and has a 64-inch reach so gives up four inches in reach to Nunez. He possesses decent power in his fists as 63.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s a good body puncher. However he’s just 4-3 in his last seven contests.
Since turning pro he’s won the WBO NABO Super Featherweight crown and the WBO Youth Featherweight Title. Diaz has also beaten the likes of Ray Ximinez, Fernando Vargas Parra, Efrain Esquivias and Bryant Cruz. He’s an aggressive, action fighter who’d prefer to stop his opponent rather than leave it in the hands of the judges and that’s what makes him so fan friendly. He was also was named prospect of the year for 2016 by ESPN Deportes.
Prediction…
Diaz owns fine kills and decent power and has a pretty good chin as he’s been stopped just once. However, Nunez is just 27 years old and entering his prime. He’s also scored knockouts in 27 of his 28 of his wins and is a relentless puncher and pressure fighter. This could be quite an exciting battle if Diaz decides to fight fire with fire but even if it does go the distance I’m expecting Nunez to retain his belt.
Nunez’s power and non-stop pressure should be the difference.
