Bruce Carrington vs Carlos Castro Preview Jan 31st, 2026

The vacant WBC Featherweight Belt is up for grabs this Saturday, January 31st as unbeaten Bruce ‘Shu Shu’ Carrington of Brooklyn, New York battles it out with Carlos Castro of Mexico. The 12-round tilt from New York City’s Madison Square Garden can be seen live in most nations on DAZN pay-per-view on the undercard of the Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson contest. Carrington last fought in July when he beat Mateus Heita via a 12-round unanimous decision for the interim WBC Title. In his previous outing four months earlier he halted Enrique Vivas in the third round to defend his NABA and WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight Titles. Castro hasn’t stepped into the ring since September, 2024 when he dropped a 10-round split decision to Stephen Fulton after dropping him in the fifth round.

  • Carlos Castro +560
  • Bruce Carrington -1000

My Pick

The 28-year-old Carrington owns a perfect mark of 16-0 with 9 Ko’s for a current knockout ratio of 56,2 per cent and has boxed 94 rounds since making his pro debut in 2021. He enjoyed a successful amateur career as he captured the 2017 New York City Golden Gloves and 2020 US Olympic Trials. However, instead of waiting for the Covid-delayed 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan he decided to embark on a professional career instead. He reportedly went 255-31 as an amateur.

Carrington stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 72-inch reach and he’s gone the distance in three of his last four fights. He won the vacant IBF International, NABF, and WBO Inter-Continental Featherweight Titles in February, 2024 when he stopped Bernard Angelo Torres in the fourth round. He defended all three belts by halting Brayan De Gracia in the eighth round and added the WBC Silver Featherweight\ Crown with a 10-round majority decision over Sulaiman Segawa. Carrington has never boxed past 10 rounds, which he has done just once, and all 16 of his opponents entered the ring with a winning record.

The 31-year-old Castro climbs through the ropes with a 30-3 record with 14 Ko’s. He’s boxed 192 rounds since making his pro debut in 2012 following a short amateur career. Castro has average punching power at best as just as 46.7 per cent of his victories have been by stoppage. However four of his last five victories have been by stoppage but he’s gone just 3-3 in his past six outings. Castro measures 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 70-inch wingspan so is an inch taller than Carrington but gives up two inches in reach.

Since turning pro Castro has captured the WBC USNBC, WBC Continental Americas Super Bantamweight Titles and won the vacant WBC Continental Americas Featherweight Crown with his 10th-round stoppage won over Oscar Escandon in August, 2021. His biggest wins have been over Escandon, Cesar Juarez, Jesus Garcia, Mario Maldonado, Juan Palacios, Jorge Diaz, German Meraz and Genesis Servania. His first loss came at the hands of Luis Nery in February, 2022 when he dropped a 10-round split decision to the former world champion. Brandon Figueroa then dropped him in the third round and stopped in the sixth round five months later to hand him his second defeat with fulton beating him in his last contest.

Prediction…

Carrington is ranked number one by the WBO and WBC thanks to his unbeaten record. He has a wealth of amateur experience to go along with his speed and boxing skills but hasn’t really faced a legitimate contender yet. He may arguably be taking a step up against Castro, who fights out of Fullerton, California, but Castro has a habit of falling just short when he takes on top-notch opposition. Neither boxer is known for power and Castro doesn’t match Carrington in skill. I’m expecting Carrington to leave the ring with the WBC’s Featherweight Title this weekend but he’s going to have to work hard for it.

Carrington has the edge in boxing skills and speed.
