Anthony Olascuaga vs Juan Carlos Camacho-Rivera Preview September 11th, 2025

WBO Flyweight Champion Anthony Olascuaga of Los Angeles, California will be battling it out with Juan Carlos Camacho-Rivera of Puerto Rico this Thursday, September 11th. The 12-rounder from Las Vegas, Nevada can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Olascuaga stopped Riku Kano in the third round in July, 2024 to capture the vacant WBO Belt. He defended it against WBO Light Flyweight Champion Jonathan Gonzalez in October and stopped him in the first round. The fight was originally called a no-contest as the pair clashed heads midway through the opening round and Gonzalez quit after saying he couldn’t see. The the ringside doctor ruled that he could continue though despite the small cut and the decision was changed to a TKO after an appeal. In his last outing in March, Olascuaga beat former world champion Hiroto Kyoguchi via a controversial unanimous decision. Camacho-Rivera was last in the ring in March as well when he beat David Humberto Tapia by an eight-round unanimous decision.

My Pick

The 26-year-old Olascuaga is trained by veteran cornerman Rudy Hernandez and steps into the ring with a mark of 9-1 with 6 Ko’s. He was actually a replacement for Jonathan Gonzalez on just two weeks notice back in April, 2023 when he fought Kenshiro Teraji for the WBA and WBC Light Flyweight Titles. He was already in Japan in training for a fight in South Korea and had sparred against Teraji several years earlier as a teenager. However he was stopped in his bid for the belts by Teraji in the ninth round for his lone pro defeat. Olascuaga has boxed just 55 rounds since making his debut in 2021 and has already had four world title fights in his 10 pro bouts.

Olascuaga measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 65.5-inch reach and kicked off his pro career with a second-round stoppage of Edwin Reyes and followed it up with a six-round unanimous decision over Saul Juarez. He then beat Gilberto Pedroza by eight-round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBA Fedelatin Featherweight Crown and defended it against Gustavo Alvarez by stopping him after the eighth round and halted Marco Sustaita in the first stanza in October, 2022.

He then lost to Teraji and bounced back with a seventh-round TKO win over Giemel Magramo followed by his title-winning bout against Kano and defences against Gonzalez and Kyoguchi. As far as power goes, 66.7 per cent of Olascuaga’s wins have come by stoppage including his five of his past six but he isn’t really known as a one-punch knockout artist. He’s a fine young champion who enjoyed a successful amateur career and should enter the fight with some confidence and momentum.

The 28-year-old Camacho-Rivera made his pro debut in 2016 and has boxed 115 rounds since. He also stands 5-feet-4-inches tall but with a 68-inch reach so has a 2.5-inch edge in reach. He makes the ring walk with a mark of 19-1 with 8 Ko’s. As an amateur he was beaten by Antonio Vargas and Shakur Stevenson and fought in the PanAmerican Youth Championships. As far as power is concerned, Camacho-Rivera is below average as 42. 1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. He’s gone the distance in his last three contests and in five of the past six.

The lone defeat on Camacho-Rivera’s record came at the hands of Edwin Rodriguez by six-round majority decision in 2017. He fought for the vacant WBO Latino Super Flyweight Title in 2019 but it was called a no-contest after four rounds when his opponent Luis Emanuel Fernandez was cut from an accidental head butt and couldn’t continue. He captured the vacant NABF Super Flyweight Belt in 2022 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Fernando Diaz. Camacho-Rivera added the vacant WBO NABO Super Flyweight Crown in 2024 with a 10-round unanimous nod over Josue Jesus Morales and also has wins over Marvin Solano, Carlos Buitrago, Jorge Orozco and Jayson Mama.

Prediction…

Olascuaga has fought just 10 times as a pro but four of those bouts have been for a world title. He does appear to have legitimate power and that could make a big difference as Camacho-Rivera lacks in that department and will be fighting in the USA for the first time. I expect Camacho-Rivera to give it a great shot but also expect him to fall just short in his first attempt at a world title.

Olascuaga’s power could be the difference.
