Alberto Puello vs Subriel Matias Preview July 12th, 2025

Unbeaten WBC Junior Welterweight boss Alberto Puello of the Dominican Republic defends the belt for the second time this Saturday, July 12th when he battles it out with former IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico. The 12-round battle from New York City can be seen live on DAZN pay-per-view in most nations. Puello was last in action in March when he edged Sandor Martin by split decision. He had beaten Gary Antuanne Russell via split decision last June to win the interim belt and was then promoted to full champion. Matias last boxed in March when he stopped Mexico’s Gabriel Valenzuela in the eighth round. Matias won the vacant IBF Title in February, 2023 when he stopped Jeremias Ponce of Argentina after the fifth round of a slugfest and then defended it against Shohjahon Ergashev by stopping him after the sixth round. However he lost the belt to Liam Paro last June when he dropped a unanimous decision at home in Puerto Rico. He then bounced back with a second-round TKO over Roberto Ramirez before halting Valenzuela.

Puello vs Matias Betting Odds

Here are the betting odds from online sportsbook BetOnline.ag (full review here).

  • Alberto Puello -105
  • Subriel Matias -125

My Pick

The 30-year-old Puello is a southpaw who fights out of Las Vegas, and made his pro debut in 2015 following an amateur career which saw him fight at the 2014 PanAmerican Sports Festival. He’s boxed 176 rounds as a pro and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 24-0 with 10 Ko’s. Puello measures just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 71-inch reach and as far as power goes, he’s a little below average as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 41.7 per cent and he has gone the distance in his last six fights.

Puello has won the vacant WBA Fedelatin and WBC Latino Super Lightweight Titles as a pro as well as the WBA Interim Belt in 2019 when he beat Jonathan Alonso by unanimous decision. He defended the title against Cristian Coria and Jesus Antonio Rubio but was stripped of the belt when the WBA got rid of its interim titles. He then faced Batyr Akhmedov for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight Championship in August 20, 2022 and won by a split decision in a slugfest. Things turned sour shortly after that however when Puello tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and was given a six-month suspension in June, 2023.

The 33-year-old Matias climbs into the ring with an impressive record of 22-2 with all 22 wins coming by KO, which means he’s got a current knockout ratio of 91.7 per cent with 100 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. He’s boxed 118 rounds since turning pro in 2016 following his amateur career and stands 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 71-inch reach, which sees him give up 1.5-inches in height to Puello. The first pro defeat on Matias’ record came at the hands of Petros Ananyan in 2020 via a close 10-round unanimous decision after Matias was dropped in the seventh round.

He avenged that defeat two years later by stopping Ananyan in the ninth round. Matias’ biggest wins have been against Valenzuela, Ramirez, Shohjahon Ergashev, Jeremias Ponce, Patrick Lopez, Adrian Estrella, Breidis Prescott, Fernando Saucedo, Wilberth Lopez, Maxim Dadashev, Malik Hawkins and Batyrzhan Jukembayev. Sadly, Dadashev passed away at the age of 28 after sustaining injuries in the bout with Matias. He’s a dangerous boxer who simply lets his hands go until his opponent is counted out, or quits. However he took Liam Paro too lightly last June and paid for it with his title when dropping a unanimous decision.

Prediction…

Matias didn’t take Paro seriously last year as he wasted half his energy on his ring walk and dancing in the ring before the fight. He appeared to have learned his lesson though by stopping Roberto Ramirez and Gabriel Valenzuela in his last two fights. At his best, Matias has an extremely high work rate but isn’t the hardest target to hit and has been dropped before. However, Matias typically overwhelms his opponents from the start to finish of most rounds and has the power to turn a fight around with a single punch. Puello doesn’t have the power to keep him at bay and I believe Matias will win it and likely by stoppage thanks to his volume punching, athleticism and power.

All of Matias’ 22 wins have been by stoppage.
