My Pick

The 26-year-old Curiel climbs through the ropes with a mark of 26-6-1 with just 5 Ko’s and has boxed 229 rounds already since making his pro debut in 2016 as a teenager. He reportedly measures 5-feet-3 inches tall with a 64-inch reach and likes to switch between the orthodox and southpaw stance during most contests. He pulled off a major upset when knocking out Sivenathi Nontshinga in November, 2023 to take his IBF Light Flyweight Title. It was quite a shock as Curiel lacks power with just 19.2 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. Nontshinga got payback in their February, 2024 rematch though as he halted Curiel in the 10th round.

Curiel also lost his next contest four months later when he dropped a nine-round technical unanimous decision to former world champion Sunny Edwards. Curiel’s other defeats came at the hands of Daniel Valladares by 10-round unanimous decision in 2018 in a shot at the WBC Youth Silver Light Flyweight Title; a six-round majority decision to Sergio Mejia two fights later in 2019; to Joselito Velazquez by 10-round unanimous decision the same year and to Cristian Gonzalez Hernandez via a 10-round majority decision in 2021. His lone draw was a four-round technical affair with Jose Ramirez Armenta in June, 2023.

The 36-year-old Guevara makes the ring walk with a mark of 43-5-1 with 22 Ko’s and has boxed 342 rounds since turning pro in 2008. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 67-inch reach for a three-inch reach advantage over Curiel as well as an inch in height. When it comes to power, 51.2 per cent of Guevara’s wins have come by stoppage but he’s gone eight fights without a stoppage with the last one coming in 2021. The first defeat for Guevara came at the hands of former world champion John Riel Casimero by split decision in 2012 in a shot at the IBF Light Flyweight Title after being dropped in the first round.

He dropped another split decision in 2015 when Yu Kimura beat him for the WBC Light Flyweight Belt. He had a another shot at that title in 2017 but lost a majority decision to Kenshiro Teraji. Guevara dropped a split decision to Carlos Cuadras in November, 2023 in an attempt at the vacant WBC Interim Super Flyweight Title. He won the interim WBC Super Flyweight Title in May, 2024 with a split decision over Andrew Moloney but lost it when he was stopped by Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez in the third round last November.

Guevara also captured the vacant WBC Light Flyweight Belt in 2014 when he stopped Akira Yaegashi in the seventh round in Japan in 2014. He defended it against Richard Claveras and Ganigan Lopez before losing it to Yu Kimura. During his career Guevara has also won the vacant WBC Silver and NABA Light Flyweight Belts as well as the WBC Fecarbox Super Flyweight Title. He also has wins over Karlius Diaz, Manuel Jiminez, Raul Garcia, Ruben Montoya Ramirez, Roberto Sanchez Cantu, Miguel Angel Herrera and Marvin Solano while his lone draw was a 12-round affair with Mario Rodriguez in defence of his WBC Silver Title.

Prediction…

Curiel and Guevera may not be that well known but they’re both world-class boxers who aren’t afraid to let their hands go and give the fans value for their money. Guevera is a full decade older than Curiel however but tops him in almost every category such as height, reach experience and power. Guevera’s losses have all come against top-notch opposition and Curiel lacks power. As long as Guevara has enough left in the tank after his recent wars I think he should be able to handle Curiel in a close fight.

Guevara’s experience and power should be the difference here.
