My Pick
The 27-year-old Ortiz Jr is still one of the hottest prospects in boxing as he owns a perfect record of 23-0 with 21 Ko’s. This means his knockout ratio currently clocks in at 91.3 per cent but he has gone the distance in his last two bouts. He’s fought just five times since September, 2021 though due to past medical issues. His knockout record sees him highly regarded as a feared puncher with excellent power. He was dropped twice by Bohachuk last year but recovered well. Ortiz turned pro in 2016 and has boxed just 95 rounds since because of that power.
Before that he enjoyed a fine amateur career by winning National Silver Gloves Titles from 2012 to 2014. Ortiz also won a National Under-17 Crown in 2013 and placed second a year later. In addition, he placed second at the 2016 National Golden Gloves Championships. As a pro, Ortiz has captured the vacant NABF Junior Super Lightweight Title, the WBO International Welterweight Title and something called the World Boxing Association Gold World Welter Title.
His biggest wins have been against Israil Madrimov, Serhii Bohachuk, Thomas Dulorme, Fredrick Lawson, Michael McKinson, Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Maurice Hooker, Samuel Vargas, Brad Solomon, Antonio Orozco and Mauricio Herrera and he was the first man to stop Herrera. Ortiz has also beaten the likes of Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez, Juan Carlos Salgado, Roberto Ortiz and Jesus A Valdez Barrayan. Ortiz, who trains with Robert Garcia, stands 5-feet-10-inches tall and owns a 70-inch reach.
The 30-year-old Lubin is a southpaw who has an impressive record of 27-2 with 19 Ko’s. He possesses a fair amount of power in his speedy fists as 704 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s halted 13 of his last 20 opponents. Lubin, who stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with a 74.5-inch reach, is an inch taller than Ortiz and has a 4.5-inch reach advantage. He turned pro in November, 2013 and has 147 rounds of experience under his belt since. His stiffest test came in October, 2017 when he faced Jermell Charlo in a shot at the WBC Jr. Middleweight Title, but was stopped in the very first round.
He was also stopped in his second defeat as he lasted until the ninth round of a slugfest against Sebastian Fundora in a shot at the WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Belt in April, 2022. Lubin was down in the second round while Fundora was dropped in the seventh. That defeat snapped a six-fight winning streak and he bounced back with a fifth-round TKO over Luis Arias in his next outing followed by a 12-round unanimous decision over Jesus Ramos Jr and the stoppage of Ardreal Homes Jr in his last contest. Lubin has also beaten the likes of Ishe Smith, Alexis Camacho, Orlando Lora, Norberto Gonzalez, Daniel Sandoval, Ivan Montero, Juan Ubaldo Cabrera and Jorge Cota.
In addition, he beat Terrell Gausha by 12-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant WBC Silver Super Welterweight Title in September, 2020 and defended it nine months later by stopping Jeison Rosario in the sixth round. Lubin still has plenty of potential and is hoping to earn another full world title shot, making this fight against Ortiz a must-win. Lubin also enjoyed a fine amateur career as he was a national Golden Gloves Champion as a welterweight in 2013. He also captured the WBC Fecarbox Super Welterweight Title in 2014.
Prediction…
Lubin and Ortiz both have power but Ortiz appears to have a better chin or at least recovery powers. Ortiz is a naturally aggressive boxer and let the leather fly in his fight-of-the-year contender against Bohachuk when he was dropped. This is quality matchup between two fine boxers so it’s going to come down to their chins and will to win. I think if Ortiz takes the fight to Lubin with his usual non-stop punching style he’ll have the edge.
A relatively close call with Ortiz being naturally more aggressive.
