My Pick
The 30-year-old Gutierrez enters the bout with a mark of 29-6-1 with 22 Ko’s and has fought 163 rounds since making his pro debut in 2013 as a teenager. He lost his WBA Junior Lightweight Belt in 2022 in his second defence when southpaw Hector Luis Garcia of the Dominican Republic beat him by unanimous decision. Gutierrez had beaten Rene Alvarado by unanimous decision in January, 2021 to win the title and then beat Alvarado the same way in a rematch seven months later in his first defence.
Gutierrez stands just over 5-feet-9-inches tall with a wingspan of 69.5 inches and has solid power in his punches as 75.9 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. However he’s stopped just two of his last nine opponents and is 6-3 over that stretch. Gutierrez’s first defeat came at the hands of Rene Alvarado in 2017 in their first of three meetings when he was stopped in the seventh round. He then dropped an eight-round unanimous decision to Hector Tanajara in June, 2018 and was stopped after four rounds by Oscar Duarte in his next outing three months later.
He didn’t lose again until Garcia took his title in August, 2022 but he lost two of his next fights as well as Otar Eranosyan halted him after eight rounds in 2023 after being dropped by Gutierrez in the second round and Zaur Abdullaev beat him via a 10-round unanimous decision in his next outing in February, 2024. His lone draw was a four-round affair with Alfredo Mirabal in October, 2014. Gutierrez’s biggest wins have been against Alvarado in the two rematches and he’s also beaten Leonardo Padilla and Eduardo Hernandez.
The 31-year-old Bahdi carries around a perfect record of 19-0 with 15 Ko’s and has 80 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2019. Before that he enjoyed a fine amateur career which saw him capture three national championships. He decided to turn pro rather than aim for the Olympics after he reportedly lost trust with the Canadian national team program. He measures 5-feet-9-inches tall with an unlisted reach.
As far as power is concerned, Bahdi matches up with Gutierrez quite well as his current knockout ratio stands at 78.9 per cent. He’s gone the distance just four times in his 19-fight career so far but doesn’t have experience against upper-level opposition. He’s also gone the distance in his past two contests. Bahdi stopped Jesus Amparan in the ninth round in May, 2023 to win the IBF North American Lightweight Title and has reportedly signed on with Jake Paul’s MVP Promotions.
Prediction…
Gutierrez has pretty good power but doesn’t own the slickest boxing skills while Bahdi has just as much or more power and is a decent boxer. The problem with Bahdi is that he’s stepping up in class as he hasn’t really faced a legitimate world contender as of yet. He has great power though and Gutierrez has been stopped three times. Either Bahdi is taking too big of a step here or his power is going to do the job for him. It’s a close call and I wouldn’t count Gutierrez out of this contest as he definitely has a good chance of winning but I’ll give the edge to Bahdi due to a combination of his power and Gutierrez’s chin.
Bahdi’s power may decide this fight.
