Richardson Hitchins vs George Kambosos Jr Preview June 14th, 2025

Unbeaten IBF Junior Welterweight Champion Richardson Hitchins of Brooklyn, New York defends his newly-won title for the first time this Saturday, June 14th, when he takes on former IBF/WBA/WBO Lightweight Champion George Kambosos Jr of Australia. The 12-rounder from New York City can be seen live on DAZN in most nations. Hitchins won the belt in December when he edged Liam Paro by a split decision. Kambosos last fought in March when he beat Jake Wyllie via a 12-round unanimous decision. In his previous outing last May, Kambosos was stopped in the 11th round by Vasyl Lomachenko for the vacant IBF Lightweight Title and to lose his IBO Belt. Kambosos had beaten Maxi Hughes by a controversial 12-round majority decision for the IBO Title in 2023.

My Pick
Hitchins is 27 years old and makes the ring walk with a perfect mark of 19-0 with 7 Ko’s and has boxed 130 rounds since making his pro debut in 2017. Before that he enjoyed a pretty good amateur career as he fought for Haiti at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and was beaten by Gary Antuanne Russell of America. Hitchins was born in New York to Haitian parents but failed to make the American Olympic boxing squad so represented Haiti instead. He stands 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 74-inch reach.
When it comes to power, his current knockout ratio is below average as it clocks in at 36.9 per cent and he’s gone the distance in eight of his last 10 outings. He’s got a pretty good chin but has hit the canvas during his pro career. Hitchins first took a big step up in class against Jose Zepeda in September, 2023 and passed it with flying colours with a 12-round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC Silver and WBO NABO Super Lightweight Titles and defend his IBF North American Belt. He also has wins over Gustavo Lemos, Tre’Sean Wiggins, Kevin Johnson, Argenis Mendez and Yomar Alamo and beat John Bauza in February, 2023 for the vacant WBC USA Super Lightweight Crown.
The 31-year-old Kambosos carries around a record of 22-3 with 10 Ko’s with his first two losses coming against Devin Haney. The native of Sydney turned pro back in 2013 and has 189 rounds of experience under his belt since. He stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 68-inch reach so gives up an inch in height and six inches in reach to Hitchins. Kambosos has just below average power as 45.4 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he has gone the distance in seven of his past eight outings. Even though Lomachenko stopped him and he’s been dropped before, he has a decent chin.
Kambosos reportedly won 85 of his 100 amateur bouts and since turning pro has also won the IBF Pan Pacific Lightweight Title along with the Australian NSW, Australian, WBA-PABA, and WBA Oceania Lightweight Belts. Of course, his career highlight though was beating Teofimo Lopez by split decision in 2021 to capture the IBF/WBA and WBO Lightweight Belts which he managed to do by being aggressive in the ring and not being afraid to let his hands go. He then lost those belts in his next fight when he lost to Haney the first time in June 2022.
He then lost a second unanimous decision to Haney four months later. Kambosos turned pro at the age of 19 but other than Lomachenko, Haney, Lopez and Lee Selby, he hasn’t really faced many other legitimate contenders other than perhaps Mickey Bey. He’s also beaten the likes of Brandon Ogilvie, Qamil Balla, Krai Setthaphon, Jose Forero, Rey Perez and Richard Pena. In fact, arguably, the best opponent he’s shared the ring with could very well be Manny Pacquiao when sparring with the former world champion.
Prediction…
Hitchins has fine boxing skills and his reach advantage means Kambosos will need to work his way inside and replicate his performance against Teofimo Lopez to be successful while Hitchins needs to try and keep him at bay. I can see Kambosos putting in a workmanlike performance here but give the edge to Hitchins as he seems to be peaking at the right time. There’s a good chance that the contest goes the distance though.
Hitchins confidence is sky high and he has the better skills.
