Oscar Collazo vs Jayson Vayson Preview September 20th, 2025

Unbeaten Oscar Collazo of Newark, New Jersey puts his 105 lb WBO Minimumweight (Strawweight) World Title on the line against Jayson Vayson of the Philippines this Saturday, September 20th. The 12-rounder from Indio, California can be seen live in most nations on DAZN. Collazo halted Melvin Jerusalem after seven rounds in 2023 to win the title and has defended it against Garen Diagan, Reyneris Gutierrez, Gerardo Zapata, Thammanoon Niyomtrong and Edwin Cano. All of his defences have been by stoppage except the tilt with Zapata and his last contest was a fifth-round KO over Cano in March. Vayson’s last fight resulted in a second-round KO over Jirawat Aimong, also in March.

My Pick

The 28-year-old Collazo is a southpaw who resides in Puerto Rico and has 71 rounds of experience to his name since making his pro debut in 2020 following a fine seven-year amateur career which saw him win five national amateur titles as well as a bronze medal the 2017 PanAmerican Championships and a gold disc at the 2019 Pan American Games. He’s gone a perfect 12-0 as a pro with 9 Ko’s and stands 5-feet-2-inches tall with a 61-inch reach.

Collazo won the vacant WBO Latino Minimumweight title in his fourth pro outing when he halted Pedro Villegas in the third round and captured the world title in his seventh fight with the stoppage of Jerusalem. Collazo has heavy hands for such a small boxer as his current knockout ratio stands at 75 per cent. The only three men to go the distance with him have been Francisco Zambrano over six rounds in 2021; Vic Saludar over 12 rounds in July, 2022 and Gerardo Zapata in 12 in June, 2024. Both Saludar and Collazo hit the deck in the seventh round in their contest.

Vayson is 27 years old with a mark of 14-1-1 with 8 Ko’s and has boxed 98 rounds since making his pro debut in 2016 as a teenager. He measures 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 66-inch reach for a two-inch advantage in height over Collazo as well as five inches in reach. As far as power is concerned, 57.1 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including three of his past four. His lone defeat came at the hands of Seigo Yuri Akui via a 10-round unanimous decision in 2023 while his draw was a six-round affair with Rene Mark Cuarto in 2019.

Vayson fought to a 10-round no-contest Tibo Monabesa in February, 2022 after initially losing the fight via a 10-round majority decision. The WBC felt the judging in Jakarta, Indonesia was bias in the local fighter’s favour and the result for the WBC International Flyweight Title was changed. In his next outing four months later, Vayson beat Nutlai Lalbiakkima via a 10-round split decision to capture the vacant WBC Asian Continental Light Flyweight Belt.

In 2023, Vayson added the WBO Asia Pacific Light Flyweight Belt with a second-round TKO over Ryuya Yamanaka in Japan and in 2024 he halted Shanborlang Marbaniang in the ninth round to take the Asian Boxing Federtation Flyweight Crown in Thailand. Vayson is used to fighting on the road but this will be his first bout in the USA.

Prediction…

This fight comes down the the hard-hitting Collazo against the average-hitting Vayson. The only edge Vayson appears to have over Collazo here is his height and reach. Both have fine skills but the champion also has more experience against tougher opposition. I’m expecting Collazo to hang onto his title here but this should be a close fight and it could very well go the distance.

Collazo’s experience against tougher opposition is the key.
