Nonito Donaire vs Andres Campos Preview June 14th, 2025

Former four-weight world champion Nonito Donaire of the Philippines is back in the ring on Saturday, June 14th as he takes on Andres Campos of Chile for the vacant WBA Interim Bantamweight Title. The 12-round bout from Buenos Aires, Argentina can be seen live in Latin America on ESPN Knockout and in Argentina on TyC Sports. Donaire hasn’t fought since July, 2023 when he dropped a 12-round unanimous decision to Alexandro Santiago in a shot at the vacant WBC Bantamweight Title. It was his second straight defeat as in June, 2022 he lost the WBC title to Naoya Inoue in their rematch when he was stopped in the second round. Inoue had beaten Donaire by 12-round unanimous decision in a classic in their first meeting in 2019 in the final of the World Boxing Super Series. Campos last saw action in April when he stopped Jimson Garcia in the third round.

My Pick
The now-42-year-old ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire bounced back with wins over Ryan Burnett in 2018 for the WBA Belt and Stephon Young in 2019 in the World Boxing Super Series after dropping a unanimous decision to Carl Frampton in a shot at the vacant interim WBO Featherweight crown in April, 2018. He then lost that WBA Title to Naoya Inoue in 2019.
He rebounded from the defeat to Inoue with a magnificent performance against Nordine Oubaali in May, 2021 and dropped him three times before the fight was stopped in the fourth round to win the WBC Bantamweight Belt. He successfully defended it six months later against fellow countryman Reymart Gaballo by stopping him in the fourth round. However, he then lost the belt against Inoue in June of 2022 when he was stopped in the second round and then lost to Santiago a year later in his last outing. .
After his most recent action, Donaire’s record now stands at 42-8 with 28 Ko’s. He’s a former amateur star who moved to America as a youngster and is 17-7 with 11 Ko’s in world title fights. He’s also a four-division World Champion as he’s held titles in the flyweight, bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight divisions.
Donaire, who fights out of Las Vegas, has also captured numerous regional and minor titles since turning pro in 2001 and has boxed 311 rounds since then with 66.7 per cent of his wins coming by stoppage. His biggest victories have been over Gaballo, Oubaali, Ryan Burnett, Vic Darchinyan (twice), Hernan Marquez, Fernando Montiel, Omar Narvaez, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Jeffrey Mathebula, Toshiaki Nishioka, and Jorge Arce.
His losses have come at the hands of Inoue (twice), Carl Frampton in 2018, Jessie Magdaleno in 2016, Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2013, Nicholas Walters in 2014 and Rosendo Sanchez in his second pro bout in 2001. The only men to stop him were Inoue in 2022 and Walters in the sixth round, but Donaire’s proven over the years to have a pretty solid chin. He stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 68.5-inch reach and will be attempting to break his own record of becoming the oldest bantamweight champion in history. He set the mark by winning the belt at the age of 38.
The 28-year-old Campos carries around a mark of 17-2-1 with just 6 Ko’s and has boxed 140 rounds since making his pro debut back in 2018 after a brief amateur career. He stands just under 5-feet-4-inches tall with a 64.5-inch reach which sees him give up 3.5-inches in height to Donaire as well as four inches in reach. Campos has below-average power in his punching arsenal as just 35.3 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage. His last three wins have come by stoppage but he has just two wins, two losses and a draw in his past five outings.
Campos stopped Ramon Velasquez after six rounds in 2019 to win the Chilean Flyweight Title and added the vacant WBA Fedebol Crown the same year with a nine-round unanimous decision over Jesus Martinez. He went on to take the vacant Latino Flyweight Belt in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Francisco Gomez Sanchez after dropping him in the fourth round. He’s also beaten Gilberto Pedroza and Jesus Silvestre. His first defeat came at the hands of Sunny Edwards via unanimous decision in 2023 in a shot at the IBF Flyweight Title.
Campos rebounded with an eighth-round KO over Ben Ligas three months later to capture the vacant IBO Inter-Continental Flyweight Title. His next contest in 2024 resulted in a 10-round draw with Edinson Martinez and five months later he suffered his second defeat when he was stopped by Joselito Velazquez in the sixth round.
Prediction…
Donaire is a future hall of famer who looked sensational in his wins over Nordine Oubaali and Reymart Gaballo but was brought back to earth by Naoya Inoue for the second time and then appeared to hang up his gloves. However, after watching Inoue get up from the canvas to stop Ramon Cardenas last month, he decided to make a comeback. Donaire used to possess great counterpunching ability and decisive power but he hasn’t had a very lengthy training camp. It’s hard to grade Donaire’s chin right now though as Inoue has been knocking out just about everybody in his current reign of terror. Campos doesn’t have much in the way of power though so he should be okay in that area. Campos gives up height and reach and is also moving up to the 118 lb bantamweight division from the 115 lb junior bantamweights. He’s a sturdy boxer but lacks Donaire’s speed and overall boxing ability and will need to work his way inside to be effective. Still, he’s 14 years younger and is just as motivated as the former champion. This is a tossup for me as I can see some logic in why either boxer will take the vacant title. No result will be surprising but I’ll give Donaire the slight edge due to his experience, power, size and overall speed and ability.
Donaire’s experience and size should be the difference.
