My Pick
The 40-year-old Spencer of Wiarton, Ontario makes the ring walk with a mark of 10-2 with 6 Ko’s and has boxed 58 rounds since making her pro debut in 2021. Before that she enjoyed an extensive amateur career which saw her capture three World Championships in 2005, 2008 and 2010 as well as a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games. She also competed at the 2012 Olympics but but after receiving a bye to the quarterfinals she was beaten by Li Jinzi of China.
Spencer won the vacant WBC Super Welterweight Title and WBA International Belt in 2022 when she stopped Cynthia Lozano in just 63 seconds. Her next fight was for the vacant IBO Junior Middleweight Crown but she dropped a 10-round unanimous decision to Femke Hermans. The pair had a rematch 10 months later for the IBO and vacant IBF Junior Middleweight titles and Hermans edged her again, this time via a 10-round majority decision.
In September, 2024 Spencer beat Naomi Mannes by 10-round unanimous decision in Montreal to win the interim WBA Junior Middleweight Title. Spencer was then elevated to full champion status by the WBA when Terri Harper vacated the title and defended it against Ogleidis Suarez in her last outing in April. Spencer stands 5-feet-11-inches tall with an unlisted reach and has good power for the women’s division as 60 per cent of her wins have come by stoppage.
The 35-year-old Mayer climbs through the ropes with an impressive record of 21-2 with 5 Ko’s and has boxed 174 rounds since turning pro in 2017. She also enjoyed a fine amateur career and reportedly went 62-25 while winning the 2012, 2015 and 2016 USA Women’s National Championships Final and finished second in 2014. She also won the 2011, 2013 and 2014 USA Women’s National Golden Gloves Final and took bronze at the 2012 World Championships.
Mayer won the vacant WBC-NABF Female Junior Lightweight Title with an eight-round unanimous decision over Vanessa Bradford in 2018 and won the vacant WBO Junior Lightweight Belt in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous nod over Ewa Brodnicka. She then captured the IBF and Ring Magazine Junior Lightweight Championships in 2021 by beating Maiva Hamadouche by 10-round unanimous decision. Mayer stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 66.5-inch reach which sees her measure two inches shorter than Spencer.
She has far less power as well as just 23.8 per cent of her wins have been by stoppage and she has gone the distance in her last 11 fights. Mayer won the vacant NABF Super Featherweight Title in 2018 when she beat Vanessa Bradford by an eight-round unanimous decision and defended it three times. She captured the vacant WBO World Super Featherweight Title in 2020 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Ewa Brodnicka when Brodnicka lost her belt by coming in overweight and the title was on the line for Mayer only.
Mayer added the IBF version of the title in 2021 with a 10-round unanimous decision over Maiva Hamadouche and defended them with a unanimous decision over Jennifer Han before losing the belts to Alycia Baumgardner, the IBO and WBC Champion, in October, 2022. She rebounded from her lone loss with a 10-round unanimous decision over Lucy Wildheart to win the WBC Interim Lightweight Belt in April, 2023. Mayer has faced just two boxers with losing records as a pro and they were her first two bouts in 2017.
Prediction…
Both boxers have slick boxing skills with Spencer possessing quite a bit more power and also being the natural junior middleweight while Mayer is moving up in weight. However when she stepped up in class against Herman she lost both contests. Whoever takes the bull by the horns and lets their hands go will have the advantage in this tilt but Spencer is fighting at home. No outcome will be a surprise here including a draw but I’ll go with Mayer due to her more refined skills.
A tossup with Mayer having more experience.
