Hamzah Sheeraz vs Edgar Berlanga Preview July 12th, 2025

There’s a WBC Super Middleweight eliminator on tap in New York City this Saturday, July 12th as undefeated Hamzah Sheeraz of England battles it out with Edgar Berlanga of Florida. The 12-round bout can be seen live on DAZN pay-per-view in most nations. Sheeraz’s last fight resulted in a 12-round draw with Carlos Adames in a shot at the WBC Middleweight Title in February. In his previous bout, Sheeraz stopped Tyler Denny in the second round in September to retain his Commonwealth and WBC Silver Middleweight Titles and win the EBU European Belt. Berlanga, who fights out of Brooklyn, New York, halted Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in just 151 seconds in March in his last fight. His previous contest in September saw him drop a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez in a shot at the WBC/WBA/WBO Super Middleweight Titles after being decked in the third round.

My Pick
The undefeated Sheeraz, is just 26 years old and owns a near-perfect record of 21-0-1 with 17 Ko’s. He enjoyed a fine amateur career and has 98 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2017. He was a three-time finalist at the national junior championships but became disillusioned with boxing after being overlooked for the Commonwealth Youth Championships. He then took a year off to focus on an electrician’s apprenticeship before being talked back into the ring and turning pro.
It was a wise choice as Sheeraz won the vacant WBO European Super Welterweight Title in 2019 when he stopped Ryan Kelly in the sixth round. He defended the title four times and captured the vacant WBC International Silver Middleweight Belt in 2022 by halting Jez Smith in the second round. Sheeraz added the Commonwealth Middleweight Title in November, 2022 when he stopped River Wilson-Bent in the second round.
Sheeraz is quite big for a super middleweight as he measures 6-feet-3-inches tall with a 75-inch reach so is two inches taller than Berlanga with a two-inch edge in reach. He possesses plenty of power in his punching arsenal as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 81 per cent and he’s stopped 15 of his past opponents. He’s stepped up in class against Adames in his last fight and didn’t look as sharp as usual but so far his power has been too much for most of his opponents to handle. His also has wins against Austin Williams, Liam Williams and Bradley Skeete.
The 28-year-old Berlanga makes the ring walk with a fine mark of 23-1 with 18 Ko’s and has boxed 85 rounds since his pro debut. He started his pro career in 2016 by flying out of the gate with 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. However, he’s been taken the distance now in six of his last eight fights. Before halting Padraig McCrory in February, 2024, his last stoppage came in December, 2020 when he stopped Ulises Sierra in 160 seconds. Still, he owns a highly-impressive knockout ratio of 78.3 per cent.
Berlanga, who’s nicknamed ‘The Chosen One,’ measures 6-feet-1-inch tall with a 73-inch and also had a good amateur career with a reported record of 162-17. He placed second at the 2013 National Police Athletic League Championships (Junior Level), second at the 2013 U.S. National Junior (Under-17) Championships, third at the 2014 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships and second at the 2015 U.S. National Youth (Under-19) Championships.
It’s no secret that Berlanga’s power along with decent skills have helped him get this far with some of his other wins coming over the likes of Roamer Alexis Angulo, Steve Rolls, Marcelo Caceres, Jaime Barboza, Aaron Garcia, Samir dos Santos Barbosa, Cesar Nunez, Eric Moon, Lanell Bellows, and Demond Nicholson. Jason Quigley, Nicholson, Alvarez, Caceres, Rolls and Angulo are the only men to go the distance with Berlanga and also get past the sixth round. His 10-round unanimous decision over Caceres in October, 2021 saw him capture the vacant WBO NABO Belt and he defended it against Rolls, Angulo and Quigley.
Prediction…
Sheeraz has the physical attributes to fight at 168 lbs but this is his first contest in the super middleweight division as he’s coming up from middleweight, so that should be an advantage for Berlanga. Both boxers have great power but Sheeraz has the better overall boxing skills. Berlanga was durable against Alvarez and is also fighting at home but I think if he’s at his best, Sheeraz has the skills and speed to beat him but he’ll need to improve on his last performance against Carlos Adames to do so.
Sheeraz is quicker and more skilled.
