  • Leigh Wood +160
  • Anthony Cacace -200

My Pick

The 36-year-old Cacace is a southpaw who climbs through the ropes with an impressive mark of 23-1 with 8 Ko’s and has 164 rounds of experience under his belt since making his pro debut in 2012 following his amateur days. As an amateur he won the Ulster Championships in 2008 and 2009 and made the final of the 2008 Irish National Championships and won the 2007 Irish Under-19 championships. He measures 5-feet-10-inches tall but has an unlisted reach so is three inches taller than Wood.

The lone blemish on Cacace’s pro record is a 12-round unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Martin J Ward in 2017 in a shot at the British and Commonwealth Super Featherweight Titles. As far as power goes, Cacace doesn’t possess much of it as just 34.8 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage and he’s gone the distance in nine of his past 10 outings. However, he certainly displayed plenty of power in his fight against Cordina.

Cacace won the British Title in 2019 via a 12-round split decision over Sam Bowen and defended it against Leon Woodstock by unanimous decision. He also captured the IBO Belt in 2022 with a split decision over Michael Magnesi and defended it against Damian Wrzesinski in May, 2023 before meeting Cordina. Cacace also won the vacant British Celtic Super Featherweight Title in 2015 with a 10th-round stoppage over Ronnie Clark.

Wood is also 36 years old and makes the ring walk with a record of 28-3 with 17 Ko’s. He made his pro debut in 2011 after a good amateur career and has boxed 170 rounds since. He won the WBA regular World Title in 2021 by stopping Can Xu in the 12th round and defended it in 2022’s Fight of the Year by halting Michael Conlan in the 12th round as well. He then took on the WBA ‘Super’ Champion Mauricio Lara and was stopped in the seventh round but he beat Lara by unanimous decision in the rematch after Lara was stripped of the title for being overweight.

Wood then gave up the WBA belt after beating Warrington last year. Along the way, Wood has also captured the British, British Midlands, Commonwealth Boxing Council, and WBO European Featherweight Titles. His first loss was a sixth-round TKO at the hands of Gavin McDonnell in 2015 for the vacant British Super Bantamweight title and his second defeat came at the hands of James Dickens for the WBO European Featherweight Title in February, 2020 via a 10-round majority decision.

His last defeat was the seventh-round TKO to Mauricio Lara in February, 2023. His biggest wins have been over Warrington, Lara in their rematch, Conlan and Xu. Wood carries decent power as 60.7 per cent of his wins have come by stoppage including eight of his last nine. He stands 5-feet-7-inches tall with a 67-inch wingspan. He also has wins over Reece Mould, David Oliver Joyce, Ryan Doyle, Gavin McDonnell and Isaasc Owusu.

Prediction…

Cacace definitely surprised a few fans with his impressive win over Cordina but he didn’t look as dangerous in his victory over Warrington. Wood was losing his fight against Warrington but ended up stopping him and he definitely has the edge in power over Cacace but his chin may not be as sturdy and he’s been out of action for well over a year. He’s also moving up in weight. Both men are now 36 years old and became champions later in life. This should be an exciting domestic clash and I’m expecting Cacace to retain his title on Saturday in an very close all-action fight via a win or draw.

Cacace has a stronger chin.
