My Pick
The 21-year-old Mason enters the ring with a perfect mark of 19-0 with 17 Ko’s and has boxed 59 rounds since making his pro debut in 2021. As an amateur he captured the 2017 National Junior Championships; the 2017 and 2018 Eastern Regional Open; the 2018 and 2019 Junior Open and a 2021 USA Boxing Youth National Title and reportedly had a final record of 65-15. The southpaw stands 5-feet-9-inches tall with a 74-inch reach.
When it comes to power, Mason possesses quite a bit of it as his current knockout ratio clocks in at 89.5 per cent and just two of his opponents have managed to go the distance with him. These were Angel Rebollar over four rounds in 2022 and Cesar Villarraga over six rounds in 2023. He’s currently riding a 10-fight knockout streak. Mason has never fought outside of North America as a pro and has faced mainly domestic level opposition. If he manages to beat Noakes this weekend he’ll become the current youngest male world champion.
As for Noakes, he’s 28 years old and has 94 rounds of experience under his belt since turning pro in 2019 and makes the ring walk with a perfect 17-0 record with 15 Ko’s. He also enjoyed a fine amateur career as he won the 2019 England Boxing National Amateur Championships as a light welterweight. He measures 5-feet-8-inches tall with a 74-inch reach so stands an inch shorter than Mason. He also has good power in his arsenal as his knockout ratio stands at 88.2 per cent and has gone the distance just twice as a pro as well.
He was taken 12 rounds by Yvan Mendy in 2024 when he won a unanimous decision for the vacant European Lightweight Title and went a dozen rounds with Ryan Walsh last December when he took a unanimous decision to defend his British, Commonwealth, and WBO International Lightweight Crowns. Noakes won the vacant Commonwealth Belt in November, by stopping Calvin McCord in the fourth round and captured the vacant British and WBO International Titles by halting Lewis Sylvester in the fourth round in February, 2024.
He won the vacant WBC International silver Lightweight Title in 2021 when he stopped Shaun Cooper in the ninth round. Noakes was hailed as the European Boxing Union Male Champion of the Year for 2024 but vacated his European Title in April of this year after defending it against Gianluca Ceglia in September, 2024. He’s never fought outside of England as a pro and his toughest opponent to date has been Yvan Mendy.
Prediction…
This world title fight is basically between a couple of young prospects rather than established boxers or veterans. They both possess plenty of power with Mason having the edge in speed. Mason has been dropped as a pro so he doesn’t have an invincible chin and that should give Noakes, a pressure fighter some confidence. Overall though, Mason is the better boxer with good footwork and should emerge from this fight as the new WBO Lightweight Champion as long as he doesn’t get careless or allow Noakes to cut off the ring on him.
Mason has better overall skills.
