After a 112 year absence, golf returns to the Olympics. It has been a long road that has seen many stumbling blocks and barriers. Especially of late as many of the top players have pulled out due to concerns over the Zika virus in Rio. A lot has been made about golf being played at the Olympics with Rory Mcilroy saying that he will watch the events that matter at the Olympics but doesn’t consider golf to be one of them. Comments like that from the leading figures in the game hasn’t helped and had the potential to dampen the excitement of this weeks event and golf in the Olympics going forward. With the 72 hole stroke play event only a day away, the excitement couldn’t be greater. The Zika virus and wayward comments from disgruntled players have been long forgotten. The excitement is palpable and the players are raring to go. The Olympic Golf Course is 7, 128 yards and plays as a par 71. The organizers who have set up the course have decided not to have any rough on it. With the fairways being wide and generous. Given that the course is a stones throw away from the Atlantic Ocean, the wind will act at the main defense. After nearly a century, golf will make a spine tingling return to the Olympics tomorrow. It promises to be incredibly special and exceptionally entertaining.
