The Queen’s Plate is Canada’s equivalent of the Kentucky Derby. It’s the first race of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in Canada and it’s held every year in July or August at the Woodbine Racetrack. The race is for 3-year-old Canadian bred thoroughbred horses and is run over a distance of 10 furlongs (the same distance as the Kentucky Derby).

The Rich History of the Queen’s Plate
The Queen’s Plate is the longest running horse race in not only Canada, but in North America, having been founded in 1860. The first race was run at Carleton racetrack in Toronto and the prize was a plate worth 50 guineas awarded by Queen Victoria. The prize is now actually a gold cup, but the race has kept the name the Queen’s Plate throughout it’s history.
The race has been held solely at Woodbine Racetrack since 1956, but it would be run at Woodbine on several other occasions as well since 1876.
At the present distance Izvestia currently holds the race record with a time of 2:01.80 back in 1990. Izvestia may hold the record, but the most famous horse to have ever won the Queen’s Plate was Northern Dancer back in 1964. Northern Dancer was a Canadian bred horse that also won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, so it’s fitting that such a famous Canadian horse also made his mark in the Queen’s Plate.
