2017 Kentucky Derby Odds and Betting Tips

By Horse Racing

The Kentucky Derby is only a few short days away.  This Saturday at Churchill Downs the most exciting two minutes in sports is set to take place.  I’m actually even more excited about the Kentucky Derby this year than I have been in the past because there is really no clear cut favourite like there has been the past few years.  Last year Nyquist was a 3/1 favourite and the year before American Pharaoh was 2/1 to win the Derby, but this year there are 4 horses with odds shorter than 10/1 and nobody with odds lower than 4/1.  In a race like this it’s really anybodies race and that adds excitement.

Below I will take a look at the morning line odds for the 2017 Kentucky Derby and I will follow that up with my top bets for the race.

2017 Kentucky Derby Tips

It’s a really fun year for the Derby because there is no clear cut favourite that is going to take half of the action.  You really have to wade through the research in order to find the best bets this year.

After my research my favourite to win the race is Always Dreaming at 5/1.  This horse has won both of it’s races this year, including winning the prestigious Florida Derby last month with the best 1 1/8 mile time I’ve seen among the horses in the field.  Check out the race below to see Always Dreaming in action:

Outside of the favourites my top pick is Hence at 15/1.  This horse won the Sunland Derby with a strong time of 1:48.10, which is only slightly slower than Always Dreaming’s time of 1:47.47 in the Florida Derby in a tougher field.  Hence could rise to the occasion in the Derby and surprise some people.  He has the ability, he just has to put it all together on race day.

Watch Hence come from way back to win the Sunland Derby below.

The other horse I’m somewhat looking at is Thunder Snow at 20/1, but coming over from Dubai will be a tall task for the horse and this will be a big step up in competition.

I will personally be placing win bets on both Always Dreaming and Hence, as well as an exacta on these horses coming 1st and 2nd for a big payday. Hopefully one of my horses wins, but either way it will be exciting to see whoever pulls off the win attempt to keep the wins coming so I can bet on the Belmont Stakes race with the potential for a Triple Crown winner in 2017.
