Virginia Tech @ Clemson (Week 8 Preview & Prediction)

One of the better games in the ACC this weekend is this tilt between the (4-3) Hokies and the (5-1) Tigers. Frank Beamer’s squad overcame an early deficit last week to finish off Duke and build momentum heading into Death Valley to take on a very talented Tigers squad that beat the Hokies twice last season as the two teams squared off in the ACC championship game. The explosive Tigers are coming off a bye week after hammering Georgia Tech 47-31. This game will hinge on the performance of Bud Foster’s defense on the Hokie sideline. The Hokies will look to prevent a quick start by the Tigers who have scored (93) 2nd quarter points this season so far.

The Hokies are led by QB Logan Thomas (1,703) yards passing but he can effectively move the football with his feet as well having rushed for (291) yards and four scores in addition to throwing for (12) scores. The backfield is paced by Michael Holmes (264) yards and JC Coleman (331) yards. Thomas’ main downfield threat is flanker Marcus Davis (585) yards receiving while averaging (21.7) per catch. The defensive backfield of Antone Exum and Kyle Fuller will have a lot to do with any success the Hokie defense will have slowing down the Tiger attack.

The Tigers of Dabo Swinney have only one loss on their ledger this year and that was to one loss Florida State. QB Tajh Boyd (1,748) yards passing and (14) touchdowns leads a well balanced offense. The receiving options for Boyd are Sammie Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins (49) catches for a (15.9) yard average. Tailback Andre Ellington (607) yards rushing is a stable force in the run game.

Virginia Tech +8.5 @ Clemson (Betting Prediction)

Believe it or not it’s been three years since the Hokies were a regular season underdog.  This is a game where you can easily look at it and at first blush focus on Clemson, not so fast. The Hokies have covered five of the last six at Death Valley and Clemson is 3-7 ATS after playing Georgia Tech. The Clemson defense outside of the Florida State game has not been exposed but they will figure to be a liability this weekend as they do give up (202) yards a game on the ground. Thomas does it on the ground and through the air this weekend. Prediction: Hokies 30 Tigers 24
