Eleider Alvarez vs Ryno Liebenberg Preview Oct. 25

Ryno LiebenbergUndefeated WBC Silver Light Heavyweight Champion Ryno Liebenberg of South Africa will attempt to defend his fringe title this Saturday, October 25 when he takes on undefeated Eleider Alvarez of Colombia. The 12-rounder will be held at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It’s not a major title that’s for sure, but it should still be a competitive fight between two unbeaten boxers.

The 29 year old Liebenberg will be climbing through the ring ropes with a record of 16-0 along with 11 Kos. His last bout took place back on August 9 in South Africa when he beat Denis Grachev by a 12-round unanimous decision. That contest was for the vacant WBC Silver Light Heavyweight title which Liebenberg now holds. His previous contest was a first-round TKO over Joey Vegas for the vacant WBC International Light Heavyweight crown.

The 30-year-old Alvarez now fights out of Canada and will climb up the ring steps with a perfect record of 15-0 along with 8 Kos to his name. His last bout took place back on May 24 when he beat Alexander Johnson by a 10-round unanimous decision in Montreal, Canada. He also fought in Montreal in his previous contests which was a 10-round unanimous decision over Andrew Gardiner.

Liebenberg turned pro back in 2010 with all of his bouts being held in South Africa up to now. He hasn’t really taken on any opponents most boxing fans would recognize other than his last two opponents, Vegas and Grachev. Alvarez turned pro in 2009 and has fought a couple of recognizable opponents in Shawn Hawk and fellow Colombian Edison Miranda and he beat both of them by 10-round unanimous decisions. Alvarez hasn’t fought outside of his comfort zone as of yet either since all of his bouts have been held in Montreal. He’s also a former NABA and WBO NABO Light Heavyweight Champion.

This is a pretty even matchup as they’re both about the same age with limited pro experience. Liebenberg may hold the edge in power with 11 Kos compared to eight by Alvarez and this fight certainly has the potential to end in a stoppage. Liebenberg doesn’t mind mixing it up rather than sticking to boxing and if he can initiate the action and keep Alvarez on the back foot it will give him an edge.

Prediction

This fight could really go either way and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it went the distance, ended in a draw or ended in a KO. However we could say that about the majority of bouts. Both boxers are on unbeaten rolls and should enter the ring with quite a bit of confidence. They’re both fighting away from home for the first time, but this shouldn’t really have much of an effect on them. They’re also both willing to step up to the next class of the light heavyweight division and of course the winner will have the inside track here. Therefore they should both be highly motivated. There’s likely going to be a winner here though and I’ve got a hunch that Liebenberg will pull this one out of the fire via a close decision or late stoppage.
