Serbia vs Argentina Davis Cup Semi-Finals Betting Odds and Prediction

By Tennis

The semi-final tie between Serbia and Argentina is set to begin tomorrow with the two lead singles matches.  Serbia is the favourites in this tie, led by world number 1 and recent US Open Champion, Novak Djokovic.  They are also defending champions and look poised to repeat.  Serbia has coasted through their first two ties against India and Sweden, winning both 4-1 even without Novak playing a single match.  Troicki and Tipsarevic have performed in the singles rubbers with Troicki holding a 4-0 record, while Tipsarevic is 3-1 thus far.  Argentina will be no walkover though, having only lost 1 of their 10 Davis Cup matches thus far David Nalbandian and company hope to put a stop to the Serbian celebrations.

Here is the schedule:

  • Novak Djokovic vs David Nalbandian – Friday, September 16
  • Janko Tipsarevic vs Juan Martin Del Potro – Friday, September 16
  • Tipsarevic & Zimonjic vs Chela & Monaco – Saturday, September 17
  • Novak Djokovic vs Juan Martin Del Potro – Sunday, September 18
  • Janko Tipsarevic vs David Nalbandian – Sunday, September 18

Serbia vs Argentina Davis Cup Betting Pick

Last I heard Novak was flying into Belgrade just before the match tomorrow after doing his week long media tour in New York.  He is planning to play, but if he is too tired or not feeling fit then Victor Troicki will take his place.  If Djokovic does end up playing it’s almost a guaranteed win for Serbia, but if Troicki plays the match could go either way (Troicki is slightly off form of late).  In the second match it’s Tipsarevic vs Del Potro.  The oddsmakers have Del Potro as a slight favourite, but I’m personally going to be betting on Tipsarevic in this match.  He showed his class throughout the US Open and even took a set off of countryman Novak Djokovic before retiring with an injury.  By the looks of things (listed to play 3 matches in 3 days at the Davis Cup) he is healthy and ready to compete for his country.  Del Potro didn’t have a great couple months leading up to the US Open, but he still has the ability to be a top player so this match could also go either way.

As far as the doubles match goes, Serbia should have the edge thanks to the experience of Zimonjic and the fact they are playing against two primarily singles players in Monaco and Chela.

Then onto Sunday, when Djokovic will surely play and defeat Juan Martin Del Potro.  Then the worst case scenario for Serbia would likely be a 2-2 tie (thats if Djokovic doesn’t play his first singles tie and Troicki loses + Del Potro wins the coin flip match against Tipsarevic), so it would come down to Tipsarevic vs Nalbandian for the spot in the finals.  Janko has been playing too well and is at a different level than Nalbandian right now and would be a big favourite.  Pretty much everything would have to go wrong for Serbia to lose this Davis Cup semi-finals tie.  Take Serbia at -300 and rake in the easy money.
