My Pick

In week three, the Cowboys struggled against a hot Atlanta team. The Falcons put up 39 points, 22 coming after halftime. Dallas put up zero points in the second half. Backup quarterback, Brandon Weeden was efficient completing 22 of 26 passes with one interception.
In week three, the Saints came up short against the Panthers. Backup quarterback, Luke McCown played well but it wasn’t enough to overcome a five point deficit in the fourth quarter. Going into a Sunday night showdown against the Cowboys, the Saints will look to get into the win column for the first time this season.

The loss of Drew Brees cannot be understated. As Brees goes so goes the Saints. After going down with an injury early in the season, the Saints looked seriously in trouble. Now at 0-3 the Saints season is almost over at the start of October. Brees is probable to start against the Cowboys. If he can go, it will be a huge boost to a desperate New Orleans squad.

Brees’ shoulder is still not 100%. Even if he suits up this Sunday, he’ll need to rely on a steady running game. The Saints best running back is Mark Ingram. So far this season, he’s failed to have the type of impact a team would want out of its number one option. Ingram is a powerful runner and his impact on the game or lack thereof will certainly factor into the outcome of the game.

Drew-BreesThe biggest matchup in this game is the Saints’ offense against the defense of the Cowboys. Both offenses have struggled to move the ball this season without their starting quarterbacks. With the return of Drew Brees, the Saints offense will look to move the ball through the air against a shaky Cowboys secondary.

The additions of Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain would have certainly helped against the Saints, but unfortunately they will not return until next week. The Cowboys will need to make do without for at least another week.

Lance Dunbar is a player to watch this week. In week three, Dunbar had 10 catches on 10 targets for 100 yards. The Saints defense has struggled to come up with big stops this season, and without Dez Bryant, Dunbar should receive the majority of Weeden’s looks downfield.

Against the Falcons, the Cowboys struggled to convert on third downs. If the Cowboys have any chance of winning in Romo’s absence, they’ll need to start converting on third downs. The Cowboys still have a very good offensive line and they’ll need to rely more on running the ball effectively up the middle.

It’s early in the season and both teams are playing at well below 100% going into this Sunday night showdown. Before the Romo injury, the Cowboys were the team to beat in the NFC East, but without Romo or Dez Bryant, they do not elicit the same sense of fear. The Saints have many holes on both sides of the ball and, even with Brees behind center; there are still endless question marks.

The Saints will look to avoid starting the season 0-4. They are clearly the more desperate team and playing at home in front of their fans will certainly give them an edge. Expect the Saints to play just a little better to pick up the victory.
