My Pick

The San Francisco 49ers have had one of the worst off-seasons any NFL team has had in a long time. Things started going south once they fired Jim Harbaugh, the coach responsible for turning the franchise around. They had four players in their prime retire due to injury or personal reasons, they lost some good veterans through free agency, and had a few players get in trouble with the law.

Due to all the off-season drama surrounding the team, expectations aren’t very high this year, but it will be interesting to see how things play out. So far, they are 1-1 in the preseason. They lost their first game to the Houston Texans, then defeated the Cowboys last week.

In both games, quarterback Colin Kaepernick hasn’t looked very impressive. He hasn’t seen a lot of action, but he didn’t perform well in the limited time he played. Kaepernick is 3-8, for 37 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions.  It is unclear how much action he will see against the Broncos, but he will need to perform better than he has for the 49ers to have any hope of being competitive this season.

Even with all the players they lost and the distractions, the 49ers defense has looked pretty good in the preseason. Unfortunately, that might not transfer into the regular season, because star linebacker Ahmad Brooks was sent home by the team after he was hit with a misdemeanor sexual assault charge on Wednesday. His status with the team for the rest of the season remains unclear.

Peyton likely won't get too many snaps this Sunday.

The Denver Broncos know they have a limited window of opportunity to win the Super Bowl before Peyton Manning retires. They are hoping they can get the job done this season, after their disappointing loss to the Colts in the playoffs last year.

The Broncos have looked good so far, winning their first two preseason games, and they will be going for their third straight win against the 49ers. The team announced that they will try to reduce Peyton Manning’s workload this season by running the ball more, that way he will be healthy by the time the playoffs come around.

The Denver defense got a boost this week when the team announced that Danny Trevathan, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, is set to make his 2015 debut against the 49ers on Saturday. If he can stay healthy this season, Trevathan can make a big impact on the team, and make a defense that was one of the best in the NFL last season even better.

The Broncos also signed former Philadelphia guard Evan Mathis this week. Mathis is an experienced offensive lineman who is expected to start when the regular season begins but won’t play against the 49ers on Saturday.

I’m wary of taking a team by 5 points during the preseason.  However, since the Broncos are playing at home, and the 49ers have too many distractions right now, I’m going to pick the Broncos to cover the spread.
